The 90/10 instructional model is being implemented at Bijou Community School. Inherently, it allows for the most efficiency in learning both languages. Students in TK, kindergarten and first grade receive 90% of their daily instruction in Spanish and 10% in English. Each year, students receive more instruction in English as the percentage of Spanish instruction time begins to decrease. By 5th grade students receive 50% of their daily instruction in Spanish and 50% in English.

Program Duration:
Research has shown that students need a minimum of 6 years to fully develop both conversational and academic proficiency in the second language to that of a native speaker. For that reason, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will continue to support two-way immersion students at the middle and high school.
