We are proud to have 17 volunteer committees, each representing a different focus to improve our campus and educational experience for our students. The volunteers of each committee do different tasks for our school. Below is a description of all the tasks/committees. A committee meeting will be scheduled with the purpose of meeting your liaison and fellow committee members, reviewing committee expectations and understanding everyone’s roles! Please pick the top two committees that most interest you. One of those will be assigned to you based on availability.
1. Recess Committee (Chair: Cristina Sampen [email protected])
When: 1 time per week during recesses
What: Assist the Bijou staff during recesses with monitoring all children on the playground and lead recess games
2. Library Committee (Chair: Susan Hennessee [email protected]) (18 members)
When: 1 time per week during the school day
What: Read to students and help the librarian with library tasks (checking out books, organizing, etc.)
3. After School Enrichment Club Committee (Chairs: Rosie DePierri [email protected] & Martha Ubias [email protected])
When: 1x per week (or every other week) after school
What: Coordinate an after school enrichment club that meets weekly or every other week for 1.25 hours after school
Requirements: Must be fingerprinted (or be able to do so ASAP)
4. Gardening Committee (Chair: Rebecca Bryson [email protected])
When: 1x per week in the fall and spring
What: Help maintain the community garden by participating in the following tasks: planting, watering, weeding, etc. and help teach gardening classes
5. Beautification Committee (Chair: Terri Quintanilla [email protected] & Rosie DePierri [email protected])
When: Flexible times
What: Beautify school grounds by picking up trash, planting, and other projects as needed and participate in the annual Community Service Day in the spring
6. Art Committee (Chair: Erin Wilson [email protected]) (18 members)
When: Monthly art lessons during the school day
What: Teach art lessons in classrooms about once every 4-6 weeks.
7. PTA Board Committee (Chair: Lisa Malone [email protected] & Ben Goldenberg [email protected])
When: Monthly events and meetings
What: Take on a lead role in at least two of the PTA fundraisers and activities and attend all PTA meetings
8. Cafeteria Committee (Chair: Norma Nava [email protected])
When: 1x week during lunch times
What: assist the cafeteria staff in serving lunch, assist students to use their ID#s, and assist with compost and monitoring students
9. Parking Lot Committee (Chair: Julia Cedano [email protected])
When: 1x week from 7:45-8:10 or 2:15-2:45
What: Open car doors at the designated drop off areas and greet families and students
10. Lost and found (Chair: Julia Cedano [email protected])
When: 2x month during or after school
What: Organize lost and found items and/or other supplies
11. Bob the BOBCAT Committee (Chair: Julia Cedano [email protected]) (3 members)
When: Monthly at special events
What: Wear mascot costume for school events such as good citizen assemblies (usually the last Friday morning of every month)
12. Running Committee* (Chair: Amber Weibel [email protected])
When: After school one day per week
What: Set up the cones around the soccer field, play music, assist students in tracking their laps
*This committee is weather permitting. It will primarily run in the fall and the spring.
13. Literacy Committee (Chair: TBD)
When: 1x week during the school day
What: Work one-on-one with students in classrooms, Listen to students read or read aloud to students, Practice flashcards, complete literacy activities or play literacy games
14. English Learner Advisory Committee (Chair: Rosie DePierri [email protected]) (5 members)
When: 1x per month in the afternoon, occasional evenings
What: Participate monthly meetings in Spanish focused on the need of English learners and represent Bijou at district parent meetings
15. School Site Council (Chair: Rosie DePierri [email protected])
When: Monthly meetings after school
What: By Election only, all spots have been filled for the 24/25 school year. Current members can select this as their committee
16. Events Committee (Chair: Ben Goldenberg [email protected])
When: Monthly
What: Help with PTA or school organized events
17. Science Committee (Chair: Jamie Orr [email protected]) 18 members
When: Monthly or weekly during the school day
What: Set up and organize science labs for your child's classroom, materials will be given to you and the teacher will teach or co teach the lesson.
